Increase the Value of Your Home with Home Remodeling and Repair
June 30, 2008
Remy Jirek asked:
Home remodeling and repair work can be a great way to increase the value of your home. If you own a piece of real estate that is in desperate need of repair, you are probably constantly on the look out for the latest in remodeling designs.
There are a variety of places that you can find great remodeling ideas:
Magazines Interior Design Studios Other Homes Building Supply Centers Internet Sites Friends and Family
But remodeling your home takes more than just a design. A home remodel takes a lot of effort and dedication on your part. You are going to have to be passionate about getting those new cabinets into your kitchen. Without passion for your remodel it is difficult to create the feel and appearance that you are looking for.
You are going to be the one responsible for creating the end result. Although contractors and builders will be doing the actual work, it is up to you to describe exactly what you will need. The better you can describe you needs, the better vision others will have.
This description is a difficult part of creative home remodeling. Often, people know exactly what they want the end result to look like, but their lack of ability to clearly describe it can ruin the end product for them.
When narrowing down your remodeling vision it is important to remember three things.
1. Details – Don’t leave any detail out, no matter how small. The more detail you can give your contractor the better they will be able to see the vision that you see.
2. Questions – Ask the people working on your project a lot of questions. Try to get a feel for their understanding for the end result. If it becomes clear that they are not seeing the same finished product as you…then go back to the details and try again. Don’t be afraid to clarify that everyone working on your project understands what you want.
3. Don’t be shy – This is not a time for shyness. Talk directly to all parties involved and don’t go through a third party, emails, or voicemails. Only directly in person can you be sure that your vision is fully understood.
Your home remodeling experience can be a great one if you keep these factors in mind.
Home remodeling is one of the most stressful things anyone can do. It is a process of destroying, then rebuilding a piece of property that is very important to you. So don’t start your project until you are truly ready to dedicate yourself to it.
Once you are dedicated to your remodeling project, make a clear plan for the finished product and be sure to share your plan with all of the parties involved in completing the remodel.
Lastly…. Relax. Remodeling is stressful, but if you are clear and decisive with your vision, then you will have little to worry about. Continue to check with the workers on your project to ensure they are still seeing the same vision as you, then relax and try to enjoy the process of home remodeling.

Modern Power Tools - the Lithium Ion Cordless Drill
June 27, 2008
Amanda King asked:
Power tools are essential for those jobs, which require more intense workmanship that ordinary tools cannot handle. A power tool is basically a tool, which is powered by an electric motor or alternatively a compressed air motor or petrol driven motor. They are typically used in the construction industry but are also used around the house to complete those otherwise hard to do jobs. Power tools are used for cutting, drilling, shaping, grinding, painting, sanding and polishing. Machine tools are a form of power tools used in metal work. It is not uncommon for the same power tool to be used both in wood and metal work.
The first used power tool was the lathe. Power tools were initially developed during the time of the industrial revolution. When factories began to use power tools to drive belts from overhead shafts. The main power source was a water wheel or later a steam engine. These tools were stationary until the introduction of the electric motor in the 1880s, which made the self powered stationary and portable tools we know today possible. The electric motor has remained the preferred source by which stationary power tools are driven. These tools use a cord but what has become increasingly popular for portable power tools is the battery. However batteries still have limitations because of they run out and lack sustaining power. Cost of buying and maintaining the use of batteries keep the cordless versions in lower demand on the market. Nailers and paint sprayers more frequently use air pressure, while chain saws, weed eaters and lawn motors have a preference for petrol driven motors.
One of the most popular power tools is the cordless drill, which is a type of electric drill but instead of being connected to a wall socket uses rechargeable batteries. Typically cordless drills come in the hammer drill configuration and mostly have a clutch setting, which allows them to be used for driving screws. In order to continue working without much interruption the tradesman will have a number of spare battery packs charging while drilling, so that he or she can quickly swap them.
The earliest cordless drills used 7.2V battery packs but over the years the battery voltage has increased to 18V and more, thus allowing these tools to produce as much torque as those drills connected to a main power supply. The main disadvantage of most current cordless drills is the use of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which develop a “memory effect” or internal short circuits due to dendrite growth. This severely limits their usefulness and life span and in turn creates a hazardous materials disposal problem. Drill manufacturers are now producing lithium ion batteries. Makita Electric Works and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation are two such manufacturers producing lithium ion batteries. The main advantages are lack of memory effect and very short charging time. Lithium ion batteries can provide an hour of work per twenty minutes of charging instead of vice versa. These batteries also have a constant discharge rate meaning that the power output remains constant until the battery is depleted, something that nickel-cadmium batteries lacks. This constant discharge rate makes cordless drills much more versatile. Lithium-ion batteries also hold a charge for a significantly longer time than nickel-cadmium batteries, about 2 years if not used, vs. around 4 months for a nickel-cadmium battery.
Cordless drills will increase in their popularity as science overcomes its’ limitations and as power tools become increasingly powerful.

Choosing The Right Home Builder
June 24, 2008
anonymous asked:
There are several benefits to purchasing a pre-construction home. Brand-new homes do not come with repair costs since nothing in the home has ever been used and the structure has not been subject to the elements.
When you have a new home built, you have the opportunity to choose the look and feel of your home, and personalize it to suit your tastes. Some home builders, especially in hurricane prone areas like Florida, are now building homes above hurricane code with extensive safety measures to protect the homeowner in the face of severe weather.
But not all home builders specialize in high quality homes, or offer buyers the chance to personalize their home. That is why choosing the correct home builder is such an integral part of a positive home buying experience
A tale of two builders: tract homes vs. custom homes
There are two very different types of home builders offering their services today. The first, and often cheapest, option is a tract home builder. These builders offer newly constructed homes at the lowest prices, and can be an affordable option for the buyer on a tight budget. Tract homes are not necessarily bad homes, but the materials used to build them are often of much lower quality than materials used by custom home builders.
Tract home builders can offer lower prices because they purchase materials in mass quantity. Because of this mass purchasing policy, they are not able to offer buyers decor options or choices in color scheme, flooring, etc. Tract homes are often referred to as “cookie-cutter” homes because they all look exactly the same. Tract homes are very seldom built above code, and do not usually include options such as safety glass, additional roof truss straps, or solid, poured concrete construction.
You get what you pay for
Custom homes often come with a higher price tag, but you can definitely see where the extra money goes. High-quality materials, custom decor options, and additional safety measures are just a few of the additional features custom home builders offer. Homes built by custom builders are usually much more luxurious in scale, and often include vaulted ceilings and bright, airy floor plan choices. Top of the line paint, appliances, flooring and fixtures may also be offered.
But there are also different levels of custom home builders, especially when it comes to hurricane safety. In states where hurricanes are a fact of life during the summer months, choosing a high-quality home builder is especially important.
Above code construction
One state where additional hurricane protection is especially important is Florida. In 2004, Florida suffered a series of direct hurricane strikes to both coasts. Even inland areas were not immune to the powerful storms, and homes throughout Florida suffered severe damage. Florida was also subject to extensive building code reform after the devastation Hurricane Andrew left behind in 1992.
Despite extensive reform in South Florida, only a handful of additional Florida counties have adopted the strict standards that are currently in place in Dade county (areas of which were devastated by Hurricane Andrew). In fact, the current building code in most counties only requires that new homes be built to withstand a Category 2 hurricane.
That is why a handful of builders in Florida have begun giving their customers an added level of protection. Above code construction is a term used by these builders to convey that their home construction standards exceed what is required by Florida building code. Some of these homes are built to withstand winds in excess of 140 mph, and offer superior protection for homeowners.
It’s all in the details
After deciding which type of home you are looking to have built (tract or custom, standard or above-code), there are a few more criteria you can use to narrow down your list of choices. First, select your top three neighborhood choices and thoroughly explore the housing market in each of these areas. Make a list of builders who have lots available in your target areas.
Personally visit each builder on your list, as you can get a good feel for the company by visiting their sales offices. Take note of your experience with each company. Is their office staff friendly and helpful? Do they have model homes to show? Do they offer a home warranty? What about builder financing? Do they thoroughly review the floor plans, custom features, and available decor options? Trust your instincts and go with the home builder you are most comfortable working with, and who you feel shares your vision of the ideal home.

Power Tools: Powering our Hands and Also Giving Speed to our Work
June 23, 2008
Smit Mathur asked:
In earlier days, man used tools which were made of bones or wood. Then came the metallic tools, made of copper and iron. The modern era is of power tools. They are nothing but normal tools, which are being powered by a motor that can be an electric one, or a gasoline based or one based on compressed air. They may be stationary or portable.
The portable power tools are easier to handle, as they can be taken to any small corner or anywhere you want to work. These tools are used in industries, houses as well as at big and small construction sites. Power tools cover every aspect of the utility that one may think of. They can do painting, shaping, brushing, sanding, drilling, cutting, grinding, and so on. In big factories, stationary power tools are used to increase productivity. The need is of bulk work at such sites and during bulk production, hand held tools would not be of much use.
Electric power tools have gained a lot of popularity and importance in the last couple of decades. The electric power tools are powered by electric motors, which either run on the electric supply from a switch board or from a battery. Again electric power tools are of two types, stationary and portable. The stationary electric power tools are those which use cords and are also meant mostly for heavy works. Examples of this kind are electric drills, electric saws, electric grinders, etc.
The stationary type electric power tools have gained much importance in the recent past. They are not as powerful as the stationary type, but they give us the flexibility of reach and they are generally lighter than the stationary ones. These are powered by either rechargeable batteries or normal throw away batteries. Modern high capacity batteries made of Li-ion are also being used to make the tool run for a longer time, without recharging. The examples of this type are hand held drills, hand held saws, and so on.
Though we may still see mechanical tools in use, but the future indeed lies with the power tools thatgiive us power, speed and ease of work.

Though we may still see mechanical tools in use, but the future indeed lies with the power tools thatgiive us power, speed and ease of work.

Solar Energy - Basic Principles
June 23, 2008
Anna Williams asked:
This article will describe how solar energy is created and cover some of its basic principles.
Solar energy is created by light and heat which is emitted by the sun, in the form of electromagnetic radiation.
With today’s technology, we are able to capture this radiation and turn it into usable forms of solar energy - such as heating or electricity.
Although one could go into technical dissertations on the subject of electromagnetic radiation, how it is converted into solar energy, and the exact qualities of its electromagnetic rays, this is not something the average person needs or wants to know.
But in order to be able to benefit from the use of solar energy, there are a few facts you should know. Knowing these facts can assist you to make a sound decisions, when looking at the use of solar power as a clean energy source for your home, RV, or whatever the case may be.
- Available Solar Resource
The technical feasibility and economical viability of using solar energy depends on the amount of available sunlight (solar radiation) in the area where you intend to place solar heaters or solar panels.
This is sometimes referred to as the available solar resource.
Every part of Earth is provided with sunlight during at least one part of the year. (I say “part of the year” as the north and south polar caps are each in total darkness for a few months of the year.) The amount of sunlight available is one factor to take into account when considering using solar energy.
There are a few other factors, however, which need to be looked at when determining the viability of solar energy in any given location. These are as follows:
* Geographic location
* Time of day
* Season
* Local landscape
* Local weather
Because the Earth is round, the sun hits its surface at different angles, at different locations on the globe. This ranges from 0º (just above the horizon - a good example of this is the north pole during the winter) to 90º (directly overhead, at and near the equator).
When the sun’s rays are vertical (directly overhead), the Earth’s surface gets a maximum of solar energy. The more slanted the sun’s rays are, the longer they have to travel through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the surface (becoming more scattered and diffuse as they go along).
The more scattered and diffuse the sun rays are, the less concentrated the solar energy is. Because of the fact that the Earth is round, the polar regions never get direct sunlight, and, during their respective winter months, they receive no sun at all.
The Earth travels around the sun, in an elliptical orbit. Because of its elliptical path, the northern hemisphere of the Earth is closer to the sun during one half of the year, and the southern hemisphere is closer during the other half of the year.
When one part of the Earth is closer to the sun, it receives more concentrated solar energy. This is the time of year that is referred to as “summer.”
But regardless of summer or winter, the 23.5º tilt of the Earth’s axis plays a larger role in determining the amount of sunlight striking Earth at a particular location. The Earth’s tilting results in longer days in the northern hemisphere during one half the year, and longer days in the southern hemisphere during the other half of the year.
Areas such as the United States and Europe receive more solar energy between May and September - not only because days are longer, but also because the sun is almost directly overhead during this season. The sun’s rays are far more slanted during the shorter days of the winter months. Cities such as Denver, Colorado, receive nearly three times more solar energy in June than they do in December.
- Diffuse and Direct Sunlight
As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is absorbed, scattered, and reflected.
The following is a general list of materials which cause the sunlight to become diffused:
* Air Molecules
* Water vapor
* Clouds
* Dust
* Pollutants
Sunlight affected in this way is referred to as diffuse solar radiation or diffuse sunlight.
Sunlight that reaches the Earth’s surface without being diffused is called direct beam solar radiation or direct sunlight.
The sum total of all diffuse and direct solar radiation in a given location is called global solar radiation. It is the total amount of sunlight hitting the Earth at any specific spot, both direct and diffuse combined.
Pollution and other atmospheric conditions (such as weather patterns) can reduce direct sunlight by 10% on clear dry days. They can reduce direct beam radiation by 100% on thick, cloudy days.
Note that the absence of direct sunlight does not imply total darkness, as some diffuse light will still get through.
- Measuring Sunlight and Solar Energy
Scientists measure the amount of sunlight available in specific locations during the different times of year.
They are then able to estimate the amount of sunlight which falls on similar regions at the same latitude with similar climates and conditions.
Measurements of solar energy are normally expressed as “total radiation on a horizontal surface”, or as “total amount of radiation on a surface tracking the sun”.
In this last case, the assumption is that one is using a solar panel that automatically tracks the sun.
In other words, the solar panel would be mounted on a tracking device so that the panel would remain at right angles to the sun throughout the day.
This system is primarily used for industrial setups, when it is used at all.
- Solar Energy Measurements
Radiation data (the amount of solar energy available at a given location) for solar electric (photovoltaic) systems is often represented as kilowatt-hours per square meter (kWh/m2). Direct estimates of solar energy may be expressed as “watts per square meter” (W/m2).
Radiation data for solar water heating and space heating systems is usually represented in British thermal units per square foot (Btu/ft2).

Freezing Weather and Water Damage
June 21, 2008
Haig Artan asked:
Property damage caused by freezing weather occurs more frequently and creates greater damage than is commonly thought. When water freezes, its volume increases by approximately eleven percent and this expansion exerts tremendous force. This force is sufficient to break concrete or even steel! When even a small amount of water enters a structure and freezes, the resulting expansion further damages and weakens the structure allowing more water to enter. The damage cycle continues until the source problem (the initial entry point) is repaired.
A number of variables acting separately or together contribute to freeze damage. A drop in temperature, the type of building construction, the amount and quality of insulation, the direction and force of wind, and other weather related conditions are all contributing factors.
An occupied building is not completely free from freeze related damages, even when it is constructed to withstand freezing weather and is properly maintained and heated. However, a significant amount of freeze damage occurs when a building is not occupied, especially if the owners are gone for an extended period, and the heating system is not on during the freezing weather. In northern climates, many people go south for the winter. They winterize their homes before they leave by draining the plumbing system and adding antifreeze to plumbing fixtures. Frequently this is not completely effective, and the owners find freeze damage when they return.
Draining the plumbing system needs to be thorough and complete. If the water lines sag or bow, it can result in a low spot that is nearly impossible to completely drain. To be most effective, draining the water lines should be accompanied by the use of compressed air to blow out the lines. If this is not done, water will rest and freeze in the low points of the lines and may cause the pipes to break. The damage then is discovered only after the water is turned back on and escapes from that break. Virtually all plumbing lines are placed inside walls and are not visible. As a result, a freeze caused leak is only discovered when water damage to floors, carpet, walls, or ceilings becomes visible. Occasionally the sound of spraying water can be heard by an occupant, but by then it may already be too late. The leak has already caused some degree of damage.
People living in the south usually consider themselves immune from this type of damage. Because of this sense of security, construction in the southern parts of the country often does not adequately take into consideration that fact that the temperature does occasionally drop below freezing. When that happens and property is poorly insulated, then damage will occur.
Winter wind, snow or ice storms frequently damage electric power lines and equipment resulting in interruptions of electric power. Most heating systems depend on electricity, and when the power goes off, so does the heat. In severe cold weather, this can result in extensive freeze damage before power is restored.
Buildings that are poorly designed and do not withstand weather well can contribute to their own damage. Many old buildings were not insulated at all. To avoid freezing, plumbing lines were commonly run along the inside of interior walls and ceilings rather than enclosed within the walls. In some cases, many lines simply ran inside un-insulated walls. During renovation of some old homes, blown or foam insulation has been added into wall cavities between interior and exterior wall surfaces and between each stud. This process many times served to insulate heat away from pipes that were located inside of walls and adjacent to the exterior wall surfaces or in attics, actually making them more susceptible to freezing.
The type and age of the plumbing system is also a factor. Rust or corrosion weakens pipes, making leaks easier to occur. When freeze expansion occurs, such pipes will often split open. As thawing begins or when the water is turned back on, this situation will result in water damage.
There is also a form of direct damage that can occur from extreme cold even though no moisture is present. Most building materials and personal property are unaffected by cold alone, provided they are dry. Extremely cold temperatures can damage some sensitive computer and other electronic components. In northern climates, temperatures commonly fall below zero and occasionally dip to minus 40 to 50 degrees. The contraction associated with those extremely low temperatures can congeal Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and fuel oil, causing heating system failure.
Regardless of the circumstances – if water damage occurs from freezing or other sources, call your insurance claims office. The professionals in your insurance company’s claims center will offer you emergency advice to mitigate the loss to prevent further damage; they will assign an adjustor who will make an appointment to assess the damage and make recommendations for the proper repair of the situation.

Making the Most of Your Finances
June 21, 2008
Benedict Smythe asked:
Let’s face it: your finances largely affect how you spend your everyday living. It plays an important aspect when you are determining what to wear, what to eat, where to go, where to live, what to drive, what to do during your free time, and even what hospital to go to when you are sick. In some cases, it seems as if your personal finances control you. But, this should not be the case. You should start taking control of your finances instead of letting it define your life.
Taking Charge of Your Finances
Clearly, it is vital that you pay much attention in understanding how personal financing works. If you can just apply the principles of finance management in your everyday monetary decisions, then you can probably be a lot better in controlling and managing your personal finances.
Constructing a Financial Plan
The art and science of personal finance starts with constructing your personal financial plan. By coming up with a blueprint on how you should spend, save, and possibly capitalize on your money; you’ll start making the most of your finances in no time. Below are the general steps in coming up with your own financial plan:
1. Evaluate your Finances. The first step in making the right plan is to assess how well you are doing now. Examine your ways in obtaining money and assets, along with ways on how you save or spend your resources. Prepare a personal balance sheet. The list should include all your personal assets, along with their presumed values. Do not forget to jot down your checking and savings accounts, credit cards and investments in the stock market. You may also include your social security benefits, and other monetary privileges that you are enjoying such as your monthly income. After listing your monetary resources, you should then match it with a list of your expenses- from your monthly food allowance to expected monthly bills and other liabilities such as mortgages. This way you can see how much you are capable of spending and saving.
2. Identify your Goals. Your goals provide direction to your plan. Usual goals for financial plans include raising funds for personal necessities such as saving for a new house, a new car, a long awaited vacation, or an education plan for your kid. Your financial goal may be a single endpoint, or it may be a long list of your personal ambitions. In deciding what your plans are, you should take note of the plans feasibility. Do not make plans that are impossible to achieve.
3. Devise a step-by-step plan. After you have identified your goal, determine the steps you should take in fulfilling your financial goal. This may include cutting down on unnecessary expenses, exploring new sources of income, or saving more money in the bank. Whatever your steps are, make sure that you are capable of implementing and following your plan. Do not forget to examine possible problems that may interfere with your steps. In such cases, prepare alternate plan of actions. Also, you ought to construct a time frame for your plan.
4. Carry out the Plan. This is probably the hardest part- implementation. When executing the plan, you need to constantly remind yourself about your goal. That way, you can stay motivated and inspired to follow the steps. Equip yourself with utmost discipline and large doses of perseverance. If possible, look for support groups that can possibly encourage you to stick to your plans.
5. Monitor and assess your plan. Keep an eye on how your steps work for the fulfillment of your overall goal. Examine if your plan is really working and if it still feasible and beneficial for you as time passes. Be open for alternatives or possible changes to your plan, especially if unforeseen circumstances affect the consequences of your assumed goal.
